Young Indian rookie Gukesh dethrones reigning king Ding Liren
Singapore: Responding to the wishes of crores of his Indian fans and chess lovers worldwide, D Gukesh captured the FIDE World Chess title in the 14th and last Game at Singapore on Thursday. Gukesh won the 18th title and just at 18 years 6 months beating dethroning the 32 year old Chinese regnimg champion, the two were tied at 6.5 points each after the 13th Game previous day.
Gukesh Dommaraju celebrated his 18th birthday on May 29 this year, had set his target on revenging the loss of his idol Viswanthan Anand 11 years ago, when he watched Magnus Carlsen dethroning legendary Indian from world chess championship. In 2013, Carlsen defeated Anand in the title clash in Chennai, after which he won the championship four times. In 2023, China’s Ding Liren won the competition, though Gukesh cut short his spremacy on 64-square chess-field in a year and a half to became the second Indian after Anand to bag the title.
Indian champ Gukesh gets $ 1.35 million (Rs. 11.45 Cr.) while the loser gets $1.15 million (Rs. 9.75 Cr) according to chamionship sources.
