Why was Kunal Kamra’s studio vandalized in Mumbai..
Shiv Sena workers attacked after his remarks on Shinde….
Mumbai : Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra’s Mumbai studio was vandalized by a group of Shiv Sena workers after he allegedly called Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde a “traitor” in one of his performances. The attack took place late in the evening, with around 40 Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) workers storming into Kamra’s studio, damaging property, and raising slogans against him. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing the attackers breaking furniture and tearing posters inside the studio.
Following the incident, Mumbai Police registered an FIR against both Kunal Kamra and the 40 Shiv Sena workers involved in the vandalism. While Kamra faces charges for his remarks against Shinde, the attackers have been booked for unlawful assembly, trespassing, and causing damage to property. The comedian took to social media to express his disappointment, stating that he was being targeted for exercising his right to free speech. He also questioned whether speaking against a political leader warranted such violent retaliation.
Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) leaders defended the actions of their workers, claiming that Kamra had deliberately insulted Eknath Shinde to provoke a reaction. Party spokespersons argued that criticism should have limits and that Kamra’s comments were in bad taste. On the other hand, opposition leaders and free speech advocates condemned the attack, calling it an assault on artistic freedom and democracy. Many celebrities and fellow comedians came forward in support of Kamra, urging authorities to take strict action against those involved in the vandalism.
This is not the first time Kunal Kamra has faced legal trouble or backlash for his political satire. The comedian has been a vocal critic of several government policies and leaders, often facing lawsuits and social media backlash for his outspoken views. However, the recent attack on his studio has raised concerns over growing intolerance toward comedians and artists expressing political opinions in India.
As the investigation continues, police have assured strict action against those responsible. Meanwhile, Kamra has stated that he will not be silenced by such acts of intimidation and will continue to perform his satire unapologetically. The incident has reignited debates about free speech, political criticism, and the safety of artists in India’s current socio-political climate.
