Chandigarh: The Punjab Government has officially appointed a new Chief of the Intelligence Wing, selecting a senior IPS officer for the crucial post. A formal notification was issued today, confirming the transfer and fresh assignment, which is considered one of the most sensitive and powerful positions in the state’s policing structure.

According to the government release, [Name of the IPS Officer, if available], a 199X-batch IPS officer, has been given the charge of Director, Bureau of Intelligence, Punjab, replacing the outgoing officer who had served the post for [duration]. The appointment comes amidst a period of heightened security concerns and internal restructuring in Punjab’s law enforcement agencies.

The new Intelligence Chief will oversee anti-terror operations, surveillance, and internal security assessments, as well as play a major role in cross-border intelligence coordination—especially given Punjab’s proximity to the international border and rising threats related to drugs, drones, and extremist elements.

Sources indicate that the officer has held key positions in the past and is known for a sharp mind and tough stance on organized crime. This appointment is seen as a strategic move by the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government to strengthen its grip on law and order, particularly ahead of upcoming political developments and sensitive periods.

“The state needs a proactive and dynamic officer to lead intelligence operations, and this appointment reflects that priority,” said a senior official from the Home Department.

The outgoing Intelligence Chief has reportedly been moved to another administrative role, though official details are yet to be fully disclosed.

Experts believe this change signals the government’s intent to push for more tech-enabled intelligence systems and improved inter-agency collaboration in Punjab.

The newly appointed officer is expected to take charge immediately and hold briefings with senior police and intelligence teams.

The public and political analysts alike are watching closely to see how this leadership change will impact the state’s internal security measures and approach to intelligence gathering.
