Water released from Pandoh dam, those living below the dam cautioned

Hamirpur (HP), June 10(UNI) The district administrations of Mandi, Hamirpur, and Kangra have advised the people living nearby the River Beas not to go nearby the River for their own safety as huge volumes of water has been released from Pandoh dam in Mandi district since Wednesday morning.

It’s worth mentioning here that due to the sudden rise in water level in the dam, the water released from the Pandoh Dam of Mandi is increasing due to the continuous melting of snow from the hills.

This has been taking place due to the scorching heat in the state of Himachal Pradesh and the melting of snow on the Himalayas has started thereby increasing the water level of the River Beas.

Due to this, suddenly on late Tuesday night, the water level in the dam on the Beas River in Pandoh reached the maximum level.

The River Beas starts from Beas Kund in Kulu district and flows through the districts of Kulu, Mandi, Hamirpur, and Kangra before merging into the Pong dam located near the Talwara area of the Punjab.

Engineer, Rajesh Handa of the BBMB Pandoh said that due to the scorching heat, the snow on the mountains was melting rapidly as a result the water level of Pandoh Dam was also rising rapidly.

He said that the process of releasing water from Pandoh would continue in the coming times as well. He has appealed to all the people living on the banks of the Beas River beyond Pandoh to stay alert.

He said that in view of the increase in the water level in the dam, the management has released water in the river from Pandoh Dam at around 3 am on Wednesday. Due to which the water level of the river has also increased in Mandi city and its surrounding areas.
The BBMB Pandoh Management has appealed to the people of the areas below the dam to be alert so that there is no danger to the life and property of the people.
He said that all the concerned district administration officials have also been asked to make people aware of this.

It’s worth mentioning here that The 76 m (249 ft) tall Pandoh Dam is an embankment dam on the Beas River. The dam was commissioned in 1977 and its primary purpose is hydroelectric power generation. Part of a Run-of-the-river power scheme, it diverts the waters of the Beas to the southwest through a 38 km long system of tunnels and channels.
The water is used for power generation at the Dehar PowerHouse before being discharged into the Satluj River, connecting both rivers.
Pandoh Lake is created by Pandoh Dam and is located about 19 kilometers upstream from Mandi on the River Beas.
