UT to Procure 358 E-Buses in Two Years, Aims for 100% Electric Fleet by 2026-27
Governor Flags Off 60 New CTU Buses, Announces Green Initiative to Improve Air Quality
Chandigarh : In a major move towards eco-friendly transportation, the Chandigarh Administration has announced plans to procure 358 electric buses over the next two years. This initiative aims to transition the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) fleet to 100% electric by 2026-27. The goal is to reduce diesel consumption and significantly improve air quality in the city.
The announcement was made by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, who flagged off 60 new ordinary buses of the CTU on Makar Sankranti, a day that added significance to the event.
As part of the green initiative, the administration has already added 80 electric buses to the fleet, saving 29.81 lakh litres of diesel and reducing carbon emissions by 7,872 metric tonnes. Additionally, 100 more electric buses will be added under the PM E-Bus Scheme.
These new buses come with modern features such as Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), smart card facilities, and integration with the Tri-City Mobile App, making it easier for passengers to track buses in real-time.
The Governor also addressed CTU staff, encouraging them to open salary accounts in the same bank to improve insurance benefits and reduce administrative workload.
