Lucknow, March 28: Along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and leader of opposition and Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav total 348 MLAs out of 403 took oath as members of the 18th Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Monday. While Yogi is also the leader of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) legislature party, Akhilesh being the leader of Samajwadi Legislative Party (SLP) is the opposition leader in the house. Pro-tem speaker Ramapati Shastri administered the oath to Yogi and Akhilesh in the state assembly. Besides Yogi, Deputy CM Brijesh Pathak and other ministers also took the oath. Several first time MLAs came with their families, who watched the proceedings of the house live. During the ceremony when SP MLA Pallavi Patel came forward to take oath SP members welcomed her by patting the tables. Though a member of the Legislative Council Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya was present in the house at that time. It may be noted that Patel defeated Keshav Maurya on Sirathu seat in Kaushambi district. A number of BJP lawmakers, including former ministers Neelkanth Tiwari, Anupama Jaiswal, MLAs Mukta Sanjiv Raja, Sanjay Kumar Sharma, Anil Kumar, Vinod Shankar Awasthi, Lokendra Pratap Singh, Shashank Trivedi and Gyan Tiwari took oath in Sanskrit. Similarly, several SP MLAs, including Ziaurrehman and Ghulam Mohammad took oath in Urdu. During the oath while the BJP MLAs raised slogans of Jai Shree Ram, Radhe-Radhe, Bharat Mata Ki Jai, Vande Matram and Sher-e-Hind Modi-Yogi, those of SP raised slogans of Jai Bhim, Jai Samajwad and Jai Akhilesh. Leader of the house Yogi Adityanath and Leader of Opposition Akhilesh Yadav remained in the assembly throughout the ceremony. It may be noted that both the leaders have entered the house after winning the polls. The oath ceremony would continue on Tuesday as well. The ruling BJP has a total of 255 members excluding their alliance partners. while SP, the main opposition party, has 111 members in the assembly. (UNI)
