Lucknow, Feb 20 (UNI) Around 62.91 per cent of the 2.16-crore strong electorate had exercised their franchise for 59 seats, spread across 16 districts in the third phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls on Sunday. This was slightly higher as compared to the 2017 Assembly elections, when 62.21 per cent voting was registered in this phase. As per the data provided by the Election Commission, 59.79 per cent polling took place in 2012 polls. According to the reports from the district, Lalitpur witnessed maximum voter turnout of 72.73 per cent, whereas Kanpur Nagar recorded minimum turnout of 57.08 per cent. Among other districts, 65.03 per cent votes were polled in Mainpuri, 62.85 per cent in Farrukhabad, 65.78 per cent in Etah, 61.35 per cent in Auraiya, 61.89 per cent in Firozabad, 62.48 per cent in Kanpur Dehat, 63.40 per cent in Kasganj, 62.56 per cent in Kannauj, 61.08 per cent in Etawah, 59.69 per cent in Jalaun, 62.80 per cent in Jhansi, 64.35 per cent in Hamirpur and 64.47 per cent in Mahoba. Besides, 59 per cent votes were polled in Hathras district till 5 pm. Chief Electoral Officer Ajay Kumar Shukla said that polling in the third phase was held peacefully and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere. A total 271 cases of violation of the Model Code of Conduct were registered, on which legal action was being taken, he added. “Besides, 399 complaints were received on c-Vigil app, of which 97 were found true and action was taken on them,” said Shukla. The entire clan of Samajwadi Party (SP) patron Mulayam Singh Yadav, including his son and party president Akhilesh Yadav, exercised their franchise in their native village Saifai in Etawah district. Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Salman Khursheed and his wife Louis Khurshid, who is also Congress candidate from Farrukhabad seat, cast their votes in Farrukhabad itself. Of 59 seats, BJP won 49 in the last elections, whereas SP got nine and Congress polled in one seat. Bahujan Samaj Party had failed to open its account. The ‘Yadav belt’ of Etah, Etawah and Mainpuri, which is considered to be a bastion of SP, was breached by BJP in the 2017 Assembly polls.
