Underage Driving Remains a Major Challenge; Authorities Shift Focus to Parents

Despite Awareness Campaigns, Students Continue to Flout Rules; Parents Urged to Play a Key Role…

Punjab : Enforcing traffic rules that prohibit underage driving has proven to be a significant challenge for both educational institutions and the police in the region. Despite an intensive awareness campaign launched in the latter half of the year, many students continue to defy the law. The authorities have focused on educating the public about the dangers of underage driving, stressing that it not only endangers the driver but also other road users. However, the problem persists, with some students resorting to parking their bikes and cars at private locations, such as friends’ or relatives’ homes, to circumvent school restrictions.

Recognizing the critical role of parents in addressing this issue, authorities have shifted their approach to actively involve them in the solution. By raising awareness among parents, the goal is to encourage stricter supervision at home and reduce instances of underage driving.

To strengthen their efforts, the police and education department are planning events in collaboration with social organizations to engage parents and guardians more effectively. These events, which include workshops and seminars during parent-teacher meetings, aim to foster a deeper understanding of the legal and safety consequences of underage driving.

DSP (Special Branch) Ranjit Singh Bains highlighted the challenge posed by some parents’ casual attitude towards the safety of their children, and emphasized the need for more sensitization efforts to curb this growing concern.
