UN helps transfer 10,000 Ton wheat to Afghanistan thru’ Pak

With dispatch of 10,000 MT of Indian wheat to Afghanistan thru Wagah-Attari Border today morning, India’s long-term policy of offering humanitarian aid on priority and keeping bilateral conflicts aside is re-established. Pakistan had been opposing transport of Indian wheat to Kabul through its territory, despite acute food shortages in Afghanistan for the last 7 months since the Taliban takeover. India have promised to dispatch 50,000 MT of wheat and other food grains to Afghanistan as humanitarian aid.

After US withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021 and subsequent takeover by Taliban, supplies of food and essential items from West had been stopped. United Nations had been issuing appeals to Pakistan and other nations to pitch in their help for war torn Afghan citizens. Yet Islamabad ignored all appeals and stuck to its rigid stand, afraid of  India getting any political upstage in its relations with new Kabul regime.

India had earlier supplied some essential and lifesaving drugs for Afghan hospitals through other air routes on appeals from UNO and local community, keeping in mind emergency needs for local patients. Though India airlifted thousands of Hindus, Sikhs of Afghanistan during the last 7 months, there are still many Afghanistan born Indians families there, unwilling to leave their business, property and ancestral heritage.

In such precarious situations, United Nations and other international Aid organizations fail to take prompt and strong action, to help ameliorate the condition of poor and needy population before it gets worsening proportions. There are many African, South American and East Asian countries, where poverty and worse health conditions need a strong stand by United Nations, rich and mighty of the world. These suffering humans should not be allowed to endure continuous pain and let to die without proper care.

As medical science has progressed by leaps and bounds over the last two centuries, communication and transportation are quite efficient, there is no reason for any human life to be allowed to suffer or be at the mercy of local politics.
