Trump’s Executive Order on Birthright Citizenship Raises Concerns Among Punjabis
Punjabis worried as US President Donald Trump’s move to end birthright citizenship could affect families planning birth tourism.
Jalandhar : President Donald Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship for children born in the US, regardless of their parents’ immigration or visa status, has sparked concern among Punjabis. Over the years, many families from Punjab have used birth tourism to secure natural citizenship for their children born in the US. With the new policy set to take effect 30 days after issuance, parents planning to travel for birth tourism are facing uncertainty.
Nitin Sharma, a Jalandhar resident, whose children are US citizens by birth, shared his experience. “We had gone to the US to secure birthright citizenship for our kids. I invested a lot in their births there, hoping it would pay off in the long run when they study in the US,” he said, adding he hopes the order faces legal challenges.
Harpreet Kohli from Ludhiana shared a similar sentiment, explaining that his youngest child is a US citizen, and had they known earlier, they would have followed the same process for their two elder children. Manveen Khaira, a Jalandhar resident, who gave birth to twins in the US, also expressed concern about how this policy might impact future plans for birth tourism.
