1893 – 1st electric car (built in Toronto) could go 15 miles between charges.

1908 – 1st football uniform numerals used (University of Pittsburgh).

1929 – 1st U.S. nudist organisation (American League for Physical Culture, New York City).

1950 – Sikkim becomes a protectorate of India and later merged with India on May 16, 1975.  It has  India’s highest mountain,  Kangchenjunga. at 8,586 m,  second only to Mt. Everest,  (Tibet).  Sikkim is also home to glaciers, alpine meadows and thousands of varieties of wildflowers (pic credit-iStock.com).  

1990 – Salman Rushdie, author, ordered to death by Iran for blasphemy, appears in public for 1st time in 2 years. His books Satanic Verses and Midnight’s Children were also banned in India.

2014 – NASA successfully tests its unmanned Orion spaceship for potential human flight over 3,500 miles from Earth; several years and more tests will be needed before the vessel is ready for human travel, potentially paving the way for manned trips to Mars.

1905 – Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

1931 – Admiral Jayant G. Nadkarni, 12th Chief of Indian Navy from Dec. 01, 1987 to Nov. 30, 1990..

1935 – General Bipinchandra Joshi, 16th  Chief of Indian Army from July 01, 1993 to Nov. 18, 1994.

1985 – Shikhar Dhawan, former  Delhi  and India cricket team Captain is a left-hand  opening batsman. A great ODI cricketer, known as Gabbar Singh for his style and  comeback  grit. He has 7 Test 17 ODI and 30 First Class  centuries to his record.  Also played Delhi Daredevils, Deccan Charges  Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings I in IPL format. He was awarded Arjuna Puruskar in 2021 for sports.

1950 – Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, great revolutionary, freedom fighter and spiritual  teacher.

2013 – Nelson Mandela, former South African President and an anti-Apartheid icon. He spent  27 years in British  jails  in South Africa for fighting for Blacks’ Rights.

You may have known….
