1807 – The world’s first railway passenger service began in Wales, England. The original line was closed on 5 Jan 1960, and dismantled (pic credit-bbc.co.uk).

1843 – The Thames Tunnel in London, the world’s first tunnel under a navigable river, was opened for pedestrians.

1857 – First photo of solar eclipse was taken by Frederick Laggenheim.

1898 – Swami Vivekanand accepted Sister Nivedita as his disciple (pic credit-spiritualbee.com).

1911 – L D Swamikannu publishes “Manual of Indian Chronology” in Bombay. This gives a chronology of events in Bombay from 1661 to 1995.

1925 – The first public demonstration of his television system was held by John Logie Baird in London. (It would be ten years before the introduction in Britain of televisions with higher definition on 2 Nov 1936).

1954 – Production of colour television sets began.

2008 – An influential group of Muslim theologians in India have denounced terrorism, saying it is against the teachings of Islam. Their thoughts were given at a meeting being held at an Islamic school. Scholars from around six thousand religious schools  attended the meeting.

2019 – British Airways flight from London mistakenly flies to Edinburgh, Scotland instead of Düsseldorf, Germany when wrong flight plan submitted.

2019 – NASA cancels a planned historic all-female spacewalk because it doesn’t have enough spacesuits to fit women.

Born….. 1745 – John Barry. US Naval officer who shaped  American Navy with sea War operations and tricks. He was promoted to the rank of Admiral.

1867- Gutzon Burglum. American scultor who shaped Mount Rushmore where huge statues of 4 former presidents were  curated   and  Abraham Lincoln  statue in  White House and more.

1879 – Bapulal Nayak. Gujarati folk  theatre personality who  acted, directed and produced  many  shows like  Harishchandra, Shakuntal (with Jayshankar Bhojak Sundari), Rajbeej, Kundabala etc. He joined  Mumbai Gujarati Natak Mandali to persue his theatre career. .

1925 – Kishori Sinha. Indian freedom fighter, women’s empowerment activist,  politician. was elected to Lok Sabha from Vaishali (Bihar) twice. She was married to formeer CM Satyendra Narayan Sinha, also a seven time  MP.

1946 – Chaudhary  Birender Singh. Haryana politician, son of veteran Chaudhary Neki Ram and maternal grandson of Sir Chhotu Ram,  who were prominent  Jat  leaders of pre-Partition Punjab. He is a former Member Parliament from INC but shifted to BJP in August 2014 and served as Union Minister for 2 years. He returned back  to Congress Party in  April 2024.

1982 – Sean Faris. American actor known for his role as Jake Tyler in Never Back Down and The King of Fighters, Forever Strong, Ghost Machine, Sleepover, Himself  and Yours, Mine And Ours Vampire Diaries series etc.  He was awarded Young Hollywood award, MTV Movie award and some nominations (pic credit-Wikipedia).
