1754 – Robert Clive again attacked and annexed Calcutta from Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah.

1757 – After the Battle of Plassey, Clive, Britisher, defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah, Mir Jafar, Nawab of Bengal and re-captured Calcutta, after it had been seized by the Nawab of Bengal who had used the “”Black Hole”” to imprison British captives.

1936 – The first electron tube to enable night vision was described, in St Louis, US.

1944 – 1st use of helicopters during warfare (British Atlantic patrol).

1947 – Mahatma Gandhi begins march for peace in East-Bengal appealing halt to Hindu-Muslim rioting post-Partition in India.

1994 – Landslide win for GNLF in the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council elections.

2019 – Two women become the first to ever enter India’s Sabarimala shrine in Kerala State, after law change, prompting protests.

Born….1727 – James Wolfe. British General known for military service reforms in UK.  He won a war over French in Plains of Abraham, Quebec in 1759.

1920 – Isaac Asimov. American science fiction writer who wrote or editeds over 500 books like Nightfall, I. Robot, Foundation, The Last Question, The ZEnd of Eternity, Foundation and Empire etc. He was honored with Hugo Award, Science Fiction Chronicle Readers’ Award and  World Fantasy Awards etc. (pic credit-Britannica). 

1932 – Sant Harchand Singh Longowal, famous Ragi and politician, born in Sangrur’s backward Gadarhiani village.  He was also President of Akali Dal  during 1960s and 1970s  before  Surjit Singh Barnala and Prakash Singh Badal emerged as  top Sikh leaders. He signed a peace  agreement with PM Rajiv Gandhi on July 24, 1985 to stop militancy in Punjab. He was later assasinated on Aug. 20, 1985 by a militant.

1936 –  Roger Miller. Amewrican singer, songwriter known for popular sings King of the Road, Dang Me and England Swings etc.  He won 11 Grammy Awards, Broadway’s Tony awards etc.

India has the 2nd largest agricultural land in the world. Only, the United States has more agricultural land than India. However, India’s agricultural productivity is low compared to that of China and many other countries in the

world. It’s all due to traditional methods of farming,  lack of scientific agro marketing and  short of irrigation system in most  regions.  About 65% of Indian population is engaged  directly or indirectly in Agriculture sectors and  contribution to  annual GDP is  about 15-18% (down from 80% in 1947).
