1714 -The world’s first patent for a “Machine for Transcribing Letters” was granted in England by Queen Anne to Henry Mill, a waterworks engineer with the New River Company.

1761 – Afghan army beats Marathas at Panipat.  This third battle of Panipat is considered one of the largest and most eventful fought in the 18th century, and has perhaps the largest number of fatalities in a single day reported in a classic formation battle between two armies; 60,000 to 70,000 died, (photo credit-ShutterStock).

1785 – Frenchman Jean Pierre Blanchard and American scientist and physician John Jeffries made the first air crossing of the English Channel from England to France in a hot-air balloon – the first international flight.

1927 – Commercial telephone service (using radio) began between New York and London.

1987 – Kapil Dev takes his 300th Test wicket. At 28, he was the youngest cricketer to accomplish this feat.

2015 – Two brothers, Saïd and Chérif Kouachi, forced their way into the offices of the French satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris and killed 12 people and injured 11 others. The gunmen identified themselves as belonging to the Islamist terrorist group Al-Qaeda’s branch in 

Yemen, who took responsibility for the attack. (Several related attacks followed in the Île-de-France region, where a further five were killed and 11 wounded).

2015 – Teixobactin, a newly discovered antibiotic, offers hope in treating tuberculosis and infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria; the drug has been effective in rodent trials but has not yet been tested in humans.

2018 – It snows in the Sahara desert – 15 inches reported in Aïn Séfra, Northwest Algeria.

2021 – Elon Musk, co-founder of Tesla, becomes the world’s richest person, worth $186 billion, overtaking Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

2022 – First successful transplant of a pig’s heart into a human when genetically modified pig’s heart inserted into a 53 year old man in Baltimore, Maryland.
