1916 – Professional Golfer Association (PGA) forms in New York City.

1941 – Netaji Subhashchandra Bose went underground at Calcutta.  He appeared in Moscow after some days , then went to Germany too to get support from their leader Adolf Hitler (pic credit-Pinyterst).

1946 – United Nations Security Council holds its 1st meeting.

1981 – Central Government offers full statehood to Mizoram.

1991 – Operation Desert Storm begins – U.S. led allies vs Iraq.

2019 – Indian spiritual leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh of Dera Sachha Sauda, Sirsa and two of his  aides sentenced to life in prison for murdering a journalist who exposed sexual abuse at the sect.

Born…. 1917 – Dr. Maruthur Gopala Ramachandran, (M.G.R.), popular Sri Lanka born Indian film star, politician and charismatic Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He played mostly mythogical roles in Tamil, Malaylam films for over  42 years,  like Rajakumari, Arabian Nights, Manthiri Kumari, Rickshawkaran and Ek The Raja (only Hindi movie). Acted in about 130 movies. He  split DMK in 1977 and became Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in 1977 until his death in 1987. He won 2 National Film, 2 Filmfare South and several state awards  apart from Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1988.

1918 – Kamal Amrohi  (Syed Amir Haider Kamal Naqvi),  popular screenwriter, poet,  actor and producer who screened magnum opus Pakeezah with his wife Meena Kumari. He also produced  Mahal, Daeera, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai, Razia Sultan etc. and was involved in Mughl-e Azam, Shankar Hussain, Maznoon, Pukaar etc.  He won 2 filmfare awards for dialogue and direction (video credit-Shemaroo-Sadabahar Ganane).

1933 – Aga Khan III,  (Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan)  Shia sect’s  leader. He also worked as United Nations  Ambassador for Minorities worldover. His father had founded the All India Muslim League in 1906.

1945 – Javed Akhtar, famous film script writer, poet and son of legendary romantic Urdu Shayar Jaan Nissar Akhtar. Javed also  joined Salim Khan, another famous writer/producer father of Salman Khan) as Salim-aved for writing film scripts together and wrote for famous films Zanjeer, Deevar, Trishul, Sholey, Kaala Pather, Shakti etc.

Javed akhtar’s solo works were for Silsila, Saath-Saath, Duniya, Mashaal, Saagar, Karan-Arjun, Mr. India, Tezaab etc. He has won 5 National awards, 14 Filmfare awards, apart from Padma  Bhushan in 2007. He has  married famous actor Shabana Azmi  in 1985 (2nd wife) and his son Farhan is also an actor/producer.

1950 – Honey Irani,  popular child actor, writer and first wife of Javed Akhtar. (Farhan is their son)

1951 – Bindu, veteran Bollywood actress, who is klnown for many villain and vampire roles in the 1970s and 1990s. She has  acted in  Do Raaste, Kati Patyang, Havas, Biwi Ho To Aise,   Hero, Alag Alag,  Aansu  Bane Angaare, Pyar Jhukta Nahin,  Abhimaan, Agni Rekha, Banarasi Babu etc. She got many Filmfare naminations but won  nil.

The earliest mentions of irrigation are found in Rigveda. The Veda mentions only well-style irrigation, where kupa and avata wells once dug are stated to be always full of water, from which varatra (rope strap) and cakra (wheel) pull kosa (pails) of water. This water was then, state the Vedas, led into surmi susira (broad channels) and from there into khanitrima (diverting channels) into fields.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           {Compiled by Lt.
