1839 – Cyclone slams south eastern India with high winds and a 40 foot storm surge, destroying city of Coringa on Bay of Bengal  in Andhra Pradesh. Storm waves sweep inland, destroying 20,000 ships and killing an estimated 300,000 people.

1867 – Alfred Nobel patents dynamite.

1884 – The first U.S. patent for the process of evaporated milk was issued to John Meyenberg, a Swiss immigrant. Gail Borden had already been marketing condensed milk, but that was sweetened as part of the preserving process. Evaporated milk is not sweetened, and has up to 75% of the water removed from the cow’s milk.

1922 – Archaeologist Howard Carter opened the first of two doorways to the tomb of King Tutankamun. In his diary, Carter recorded, “Noted seals. … Opened the first doorway; which comprised rough stones built up from the threshold to the lintel, plastered over on the outside face, and covered with numerous impressions from various seals of Tutankhamun.  Amen and the Royal Necropolis seal. … As we cleared the passage we found mixed with the rubble broken potsherds, jar seals, and numerous fragments… These were disturbing elements as they pointed towards plundering.”

1948 – National Cadet Corps was first established.

1975 – The first U.S. patent for a whole-body X-ray scanner was issued to Robert S. Ledley.

2009 – A Pakistan court charges seven suspects involved in the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

2017 – Longest known frozen embryo to be successfully born is delivered in Tennessee – Emma Wren Gibson, frozen 24 years ago.

2021 – India has more girls than boys for the first time in its history and its population boom is ending, according to new government survey.

1844 – Karl Friedrich Benz was a German mechanical engineer who designed and in 1885 built the world’s first practical automobile to be powered by an internal-combustion engine.

1879 – Sri Thanwardas Lilaram Vaswani, professor, saint poet, great orator and prolific writer. He was the founder of Mira Movement.

1929 – Surinder Kaur, Punjabi and Hindi folk  songwriter. She sang evergreen songs like Kala Doria, Bajre Da Sitta, Akhiyan ch Toon Vasda,  Chann Kithe Guzari ye Raat, Suhe we Cheere Waliya etc.  (Video credit-Saregama Music)  

1966 – Roopa Ganguli,  Bengali and Bollywood actor and BJP politician. Known for playing epic  role of Draupadi in BR Chopra’s TV serial Mahabharat telecast from October 02, 1988 onwards. 1977 – Dilip Tirkey,  Former Indian Hockey  team captain who played in 400 over  International matched and 3 Olympics from 14996 onwards. He’s the current President of Hockey India and has been awarded Padam Shri (pic credit-Sambad English).

1978 – Rakhi Sawant, romantic and lively Bollywood and TV actor, dancer  and model. Acted in Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Oriya, Tamil and Telugu films like Joru Ka Gulam, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai, Dil Bole Hadippa, Mumbai Can  Dance Saala etc.  She has won some dance awards and appreciations… !

RIP….1984 – Yashwantrao B. Chavan, first Chief Minister of Maharashtra and former Deputy Prime Minister. He was one of the most renowned Congress leaders from Maharashtra.

You may have known….A hummingbird weighs less than a penny. It has a  short life span of 3-5 years. It can fly backwards and change direction  within seconds.
