1784 – Tipu Sultan and Britishers signed the treaty at Mangalore which is known as the Mangalore treaty.

1811 – The Luddite riots began in Nottingham, England. There was poverty and misery, made worse by the new inventions – machinery which could do jobs better and faster than people.

1892 – 1st public basketball game (Springfield, Massachuetts).
1918 – The first cases of “Spanish Influenza” in the U.S. were reported. It became the worst epidemic in American history, killing over 600,000 – until it disappeared as mysteriously as it had begun. Worldwide, up to 40 million people died in its wake.
2011 – Sendai, a major 9.0 earthquake strikes offshore of Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture; 10-meter high tsunami’s are produced near its epicenter, reaching land through the Pacific ocean. It caused 15,894 deaths, 6,152 injured and 2,562 people missing.
2019 – Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, refutes Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement “Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people – and only it.”
Born…. 1903 – General MM Shrinagesh, 3rd Army Chief of India from May 7, 1955 to May 14, 1957. He opposed use of Army for labour and other civil activities by PM Nehru. He also officiated as Governor of Assam (Oct. 1959 – Sept. 1962)
1931 – Rupert Murdoch, Australian media mogul. He founded Fox News Network, NewsCorp, Sky Italia, 21st century Fox, Fox Broadcasting TV Stations).

RIP…. 1689 – Sambhaji, Shivaji’s successor, who was captured at Sangameshwar, was assasinated in the prison of Aurangzeb by Mughal officer Muqurab Khan . He was the eldest son Shivaji Maratha and a great fighter. He once over powered a fierce lion attacking village folk in his kingdom. Titbits…. 1302 – Romeo and Juliet’s wedding day, according to Shakespeare. The Italian youth lovers believed to have had a tragic romance story in 1550s by Matteo Bandeleo; later retold by Arther Brooke and William Painter.
