1863 – Four-wheeled roller skates were patented by James Plimpton of New York.

1887 – Thomas Stevens, US, is 1st man to bicycle around the world.

1902 – The Carnegie Institute of Washington, was founded to establish a centre for cutting-edge scientific research. Andrew Carnegie controlled major share of  steel industy and became the richest man of America and British Empire during 9th century.

1912 – The closest approach to earth by the moon was 221,441 miles apart centre to centre.

1932 – British Viceroy of India Lord Willingdon arrests Gandhi & Nehru.

1948 – Burma achieved its independence from Great Britain. (In 1989, Burma changed its name to Myanmar to reflect the multi-ethnic composition of the country).

1962 – The first fully automated subway passenger train began New York City.

1966 – Indo-Pak Summit, the peace talk between Pakistan and Indian leaders, started at Tashkent. The prominent personalities were Lal Bahadur Shastri and Gen. Ayub Khan.

1967 – Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. began delivery of the MIG aircraft.

1972 – Pakistan proposed to talk after the (1971) Indo-Pak  war, that resulted in formation of Bangladesh..

1996 – The EV1 electric car, running on nickel-metal-hydride batteries, was announced by General Motors. It was scrapped in 2003, citing excessive production and maintenance expenses.

2004 – Spirit, a robot rover landed on Mars to analyze the planet’s rocks, looking for evidence of water. It has taken the only photo of Earth from another planet. 2010 – The Burj Khalifa, 829.8 m tall, officially opens in Dubai.

2021 – South Korea, already the country with world’s lowest birth rate, records more deaths than births for the first time.

2024 – Diplomatic row erupts between India and the Maldives after Indian PM Narendra Modi encourages Indians to travel to the Lakshadweep islands instead.

1809 – Louis Braille, French educator who developed a tactile form of printing and writing, known as braille. He lost his eysight in one eye at age 3. (His  Birthday is celebrated as World Braille Day).

1925 – Pradeep Kumar, legendary Bollywood actor. He baqcted  mostly in historical  epic stories and was most popular during 1940s-1980s  like Naagin, Anarkali, Aarti, Taj Mahal, Ghunghat, Bheegi Raat, Bahu Begam, Adalat, Shirin Farhad, Duniya Na Maane,  Noor zJehan, Chitralekha etc. He received Bengal  Journalists’ and some National Film awards.

1931 – Nirupa Roy, veteran and mpost popular actor of 1940s to 1990s. Called as Queen of  Misery  for her  roles  of tragedy  and  sorrow  in films  like  Do Bigha Zamin, Bhai  Bhai,  Aan Milo Sajna, Purab Aur Paschim, Ganga Tera Paani Amrit, Maa, Deewar, Abhinetri,  Mard etc. She has won 4 Filmfar e and a  Lifetime Achievement  award  in 2004.

1957 – Gurdas Mann, popular Punjabi pop and rap singer. He has ptroduced 34 albums and 340 songs. Acted in some Punjabi films like Des Hoya Pardes, Sukhmani-Hope for Life, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar, Veer Zara, Ucha Dar Babe Da etc.

11965 – Aditya Pancholi, Popular film actor and producer. Known for roles in Saathi, Yes Boss, Aatish, Hero, Yaad Rahegi Duniya etc. (pic credit-CineTown)

RIP….1994 – Rahul Dev Burman, famous music director better known as ‘Pancham Da’. Son of legendary music director Sachin Dev Burman, Pacham Da produced  several successful music notes and excelled  between 1960s to 1990s. mainly with legendary singer Kishore Kishore. He won 5 Filmfare and National awards from almost 331 films (Music video credit-Universal Music India)

You may have known….

India produces 106.19 million tonnes of rice a year from 44 million hectares of land. That’s a yield rate of 2.4 tonnes per hectare, placing India at 27th place out of 47 countries. China and Brazil have yield rates of 4.7 tonnes per hectare and 3.6 tonnes per hectare, respectively.
