1857 – A U.S. patent was issued to Ephraim Ball for his mower design, which became the first widely successful of the two-wheeled flexible or hinged bar mowers.

1878 – The White House, Washington, had its first telephone installed by Alexander Graham Bell himself. Reportedly, the first outgoing call went to Bell, thirteen miles away. President Hayes first words instructed Bell to speak more slowly.

1953 – Hugh Hefner publishes 1st edition of Playboy magazine, featuring Marilyn Monroe as the magazine’s 1st centrefold. (pic credit-Playboy & Pinterest)

1959 – The 1st colour photograph of Earth received from outer space.

1963 – Nagaland becomes the 16th state of Indian union with Kohima as its capital.

1965 – Border Security Force was organised, which would be armed and trained to man the International Border with Pakistan.

1988 – Benazir Bhutto named 1st female and twice Prime Minister of a Muslim country, Pakistan. She was the daughter of former PM Zulfikar ali Bhutto. Was assasinated in a bomb attack in Rawalpindi in 2007.

1990 – British and French workers digging the Channel Tunnel finally met in the service tunnel after knocking out a passage large enough to walk through and shake hands, 22.3 km from the UK and 15.6 km from France. The United Kingdom and France were now linked for the first time in 8,000 years. The tunnelling began three years earlier, on this same day in 1987.

1991 – 92% of Ukrainians vote for independence from the Soviet Union.

2021 – Tel Aviv named the world’s most expensive city for the first time ahead of Singapore and Paris, with Damascus the cheapest.

Born….1761 – Marie Tussaud, (Anna Maria) A  French architect, sculpturist famous for Wax sculptures. She founded  Madame Tussaud’s wax museums, which are now  23 in important places worldover including London, Paris, Berlin, Singapore, New Delhi,  Washington, Canberra etc.

1894 – Bhim Sen Sachar, freedom fighter, leader was born in Peshawar (now in Pakistan), became lawyer and Chief Justice of Delhi High Court. Later became  Chief Minister of Punjab three times. Also headed the Sachar Committee on study of social, economical and educational status of Muslims in India, in 2005.

1954 – Medha Patkar, social activist. Known for opposing  SardarSarovar Dam and Narmada Bachao Andolan,  running thru’ Madhya Pradesh  and Gujarat.

1980 – Mohammed Kaif,  dashing Indian cricketer, alrounder who captained India’ Under-19 team for World Cup 2000 and won the top trophy. Hevalso played 23 Tests and 126 ODIs for India. In IPL format  he  played for Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals.

RIP….1866 – Sir George Everest, a Welsh military engineer and geodesist who worked on the trigonometrical survey of India providing the accurate mapping of the subcontinent.

1990 – Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, Indian diplomat and politician. She was the daughter of first PM Nehra and was appointed as India’s Ambassdor to United Nations after Independence. She also served as President bof UNGA in 1953-54 and later became Governor of Maharashtra. Her daughter is famous writer Novelist Nayantara Sehgal, who was awarded Sahitya Akademy award in 1986 for her novel Rich Like Us.

2002 – Abu Abraham, visual artist,  journalist, author, worked as cartoonist in The Bombay Chronicle, Shankar’s Weekly,  Indian Express, The Tribune, Blitz, the Guardian,  etc.. also wrote books like Abu on Bagladesh, Abu  Abraham on Janata Rule, A Collection of Cartoons, Arrivals and Departures etc.
