1879 – Milk was sold in glass bottles for the first time in the U.S. They were introduced by the Echo Farms Dairy Co. of New York.
1929 – Indian Independence Movement: At the Delhi Central Assembly, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt throw handouts and bombs to court arrest.
1950 – Nehru-Liaqat Ali Accord signed. It was signed after 6 days of parleys, for protecting minoritity rights in each country, for those who opted for staying either in India or Pakistan after Partition of India in 1947. Though India has followed it in spirit and law as minority muslims have grown from mere 30 lakhs to over 20 crores, while in Pakistan most of the Hindus have been co
nverted tino Islam or killed or left Pakistan in disctress due to attrocities. (reduced from 3 lakhs to a few thosands today).
1953 – The first 3D motion picture produced and released by a major company, Man in the Dark, op ened at the Globe Theater in New York City.
1964 – NASA launches Gemini-1 rocket into space.
1973 – India takes control over Sikkim after anti-government riots.
1997 – Delhi High Court quashes charges of corruption and criminal conspiracy against L.K. Advani (BJP President), and former Union Minister V.C. Shukla in the Jain hawala case (pic credit-thelallantop.com).
Born…. 1925 – Kumar Gandharva (Shivputra Siddharamaiya Komkali), famous Indian vocal classic singer and music director. He had a unique style in Nirgun Ragas, Shudh Shyam, Miyan Malhar, Kukubh Bilawal, Bhim Plassi, Malkaus etc. and wasn’t tied to any gharana. He performed vocal in spiritual and folk to the delight of thousands of his fans and well wisherts. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1990.
1972 – Tannaz Irani. Popular Bollywood and TV actor, model. She has acted in Yeh Meri Life Hai, Kaho Na Pyar Hai, Main Prem Ki Deevani, etc. She plays comic and family roles with dialogue delivery with a punch.
RIP….1857 — Mangal Pandey, the first revolutionary of India’s Independence Movement and freedom fighter, was hanged at Barrackpore. He struck the first bullet during the time of mutiny against the British Empire.
1894 – Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, famous novelist, poet, journalist and writer of national song ‘Vande Mataram‘. Some of his other writings are ‘Anandmath’, Durgeshnandini, Mrinalini, Bishbriksha, Devi Chaudhurani and ‘Kapal Kundala’.
