1774 – British Commander Colonel Chapman defeated Rohilla’s army and captured Ruhelkhand.

1827 – William Rowan Hamilton established the wave theory of light, which gives that light is a form of energy that travels in waves (pic credit-Mac Tutor History).

1867 – Queen Victoria and Napoleon III turn down plans for a channel tunnel.

1896 – The first movie shown to a paying theatre audience in the U.S. had a series of short scenes. Included in the film shorts were a ballet scene, a burlesque boxing match, waves on a sea shore, and a comic allegory The Monroe Doctrine.

1940 – The leak-proof flashlight battery was patented.

1981 – Artificial skin was first transplanted in the U.S. It included a combination of cowhide, shark cartilage and plastic. This material makes possible the treatment of burn patients whose injuries might otherwise be fatal.

2013 – West Indian cricketer, Chris Gayle, smashes the fastest century in history in 30 balls. Opener known for big shots, has several records to his credit.

RIP…. 1616 – William Shakespeare.   Known as the greatest  novelist of drama, tragedy  prose,  a playwright of Engliosh literature. Wrote The Tragedy of Macbeth, Romeo &  Juliet etc.                                                                                                 1968 – Bade Gulam Ali Khan, famous ghazal singer (pic credit-Saregama).           1992 – Satyajit Ray, internationally famous Indian film producer-director,  who directed Pather Panchali, Shatranj ke Khiladi, Chiriyakhana, Sadgati etc. He won 10 National and Filmfare awards . Also awarded Dada Saheb Phalke in 1985 and Bharat Ratna in 1992.                                                                                                                                                     Titbits…. 1900 – 1st known occurrence of word “hillbillie”, in New York Journal. (Often used as an insult and racial slur against White folks who live in the country. A hillbilly is a person who lives in a remote, rural area and therefore is isolated and somewhat out of touch with  modern culture).

You may have known….  1.  Water can boil and freeze at the same time.  Normally water freezes at  0 degree and boils at 100 degree Centigrade.  But under extreme conditions, such as at very low pressures, water can boil and freeze at the same time. This phenomenon is known as the triple point of water.                                                                                                                                                                                        2.  An Indian man named Jadav Payeng started planting trees on a barren sandbar at 17.
