1876 – Alexander Graham Bell made what was, in effect, the first telephone call.

1910 – China ends slavery.

1948 – Herbert H. Hoover became the first civilian pilot to exceed the speed of sound  (pic credit-Wikipedia).

1959 – The Tibetan uprising began when thousands of Tibetans surrounded the Dalai Lama’s palace to protect him from Chinese forces.

1991 – The Army Dental Corps celebrates its Golden Jubilee and proudly recounts its past glory.

2020 – Russian lower house of Parliament passes legislation to allow Vladimir Putin to hold office of President for life.

2023 – Arch rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia agree to re-establish diplomatic ties between them in a surprise move, after talks in Beijing.

2023 – Xi Jinping appointed to a historic third term as President of China (previously restricted to two terms).

1926 – Dilbagh Singh. PVSM, AVSM, VM, Air Chief Marshal, Chief of Air Staff and Indian Air Force. 2nd Sikh Air Force officer to head  IAF (1981-84). The first sikh Air Marshal was Arjan Singh. He was  later appointed  as India’s  Ambassador  to  Brazil.
1945 – Madhavrao Scindia. Former Indian (titular)  prince of Gwalior state founded by Ranoji and Jiwaji Rao, generals of Maratha Bhonsle kings. They turned   politician after independence. Madhavrao was  Union Minister of Communication, Civil Aviation under  Rajiv Gandhi and PV Narasimha Rao  govts. He owned palacious  400 room,  Rs. 4,000 crore  worth  Laxmi Vilas Palace in Gwalior and enormous properties, majority shares in leading textile companies.

1949 -Padma Khanna. Indian actress, known for mainly romanitc, vampire roles in Bhojpuri, Hindi  films like Johnny Mera Naam, Naag Champa, Haiwan, Balram Pardesia, Dharti Maiya, Nirdosh  etc.  Acted in about 400 films and won many awards apart from Pama Shri. She also played  important  role of Kaikeyi in Ramanand Sagar’s epic serial Ramayana.

1957 – Osama bin Laden, Islamic militant and founder of al-Qaeda. He was known to have organised  9/11 Twin Tower attack  demolishing  Times Towers and attacking Pentagon. He was killed in  Abottabad  Pakistan by US drones in  May 2011.

1958 – Sharon Stone. American fashion model, actor, producer. Stone has won 11 awards from 42 nominations, including one Emmy Award, one Golden Globe Award, two MTV Movie Awards, and one Satellite Award.

1970- Omar Abdullah- Incombent Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, grandson of National Conference founder Sheikh Abdullah who became cjief Minister of the state after  J&K’s  accession to India in 1948.

RIP…. 37 – Tiberius Claudius Nero, Roman emperor. He is believed to be tyrannical, self-indulgent, busy enjoying  his favourite  music while his  kingdom was burning.

When Dr Rajendra Prasad was appointed the President of India, he only took 50% of his salary,  claiming he did not require more than that. Towards the end of his 12-year tenure he only took 25% of his salary.
