1950 – Mother Teresa received the permission of the Vatican to start the Missionaries of Charity. Beginning in Calcutta as a small order with only 13 members, it had grown by the turn of the century into a congregation of thousands of sisters running orphanages, AIDS hospices and charity centres.

1997 – Indian Central government women employees to get 135 days’ maternity leave and men to get 15 days’ paternity leave.

1914 – Begum Akhtar, legendary  Bollywood and Ghazal singer, actor.She was also called Mallika-e-Ghazal and sang classical dhuns like Dadra, Thumri and ghazal. She was honored with Sangeet Natak Academy award, Padam Shri and several  other awards.

1978 – Zaheer Khan, former Indian mediaum fast bowler and right hand batsman. He played 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20 internationals. Also played for Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils and RCB  in IPL.

1979 – Yukta Mukhey, model and Bollywood actor. She won 1Miss World 1999  and Femina Miss India, Ponds Miss India World  titles. Acted in some films like Pyasa, Mem Saheb, Katputli, Love in Japan etc.

1708 – Guru Gobind Singh, 10th Guru of Sikh Panth, who  established Khasa Panth on 13 April 1699 led by Panj Piyaras, wear 5 Kakars as ornaments on their bodies. He also  announced that there won’t be any living Guru after him. Guru Granth Sahib, the Holy book of Sikhs, a collection of shikshas from Guru Nanak Dev and  other gurus thereafter, and wise edicts from other religions, will be considered as the Guru embodiment for all followers of Sikhism in future.

His two elder sons Sahibzade Jujhar Singh, Ajit Singh wre killed in battle with Mughals and the younger two Sahibzade Fateh Singh and Zorawar Singh were executed by the Governor of Sirhind by burrying them alive  in a wall, after they refused to  convert into Muslim religion.
