1894 – New York passes 1st state dog license law.
1910 – Elise Deroche (Baroness de Laroche) bacame the first woman to be issued a pilot’s license by the Aero Club de France. She had made her first solo flight in 1909 (pic credit-pinterest.com).
1911 – Ist International Woman’s Day. In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.The day marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
1930 – Mahatma Gandhi starts civil disobedience in India.
1946 – First U.S. commercial helicopter license was issued to the New York Journal-American newspaper. The helicopter, Bell 47B was used for news gathering and delivering photographs.
1948- Air India International established by nationalising Tata Ailines
1976 – The largest recovered single stony meteorite (1,774 kg) fell in Jilin, China, during a meteor shower that dropped more than 4,000 kg of extra-terrestrial rock.
1994 – B-737 collides with Ilyushin-86 in New Dehli, at least 8 killed (indicative image).
2009 – India Golfer Jyoti Randhawa wins Thailand Open Golf tournament.
2015 – A report is released on the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight 370, one year after the incident, revealing that the flight’s locator beacon battery had expired a year before the flight, but nothing unusual was otherwise detected (pic credit-simlyflying.com).
2023 – 171 trillion pieces of plastic now litter the world’s oceans, increasing from 16 trillion in 2005, estimate scientists from Gyres Institute.
Born…. 1921 – Sahir Ludhiyanvi, famous film lyricist. Sahir Ludhianvi is the pen name of Abdul Hayee, is popularly known as Sahir. Sahir was a poet and film lyricist who wrote in the Hindi and Urdu languages. His works influenced Indian cinema, in particular Bollywood films. (He had an unfulfilled love relationship with Amrita Pritam). He wrote ghazals, bhajans, nazms, sher-o-shayri, qita, lori and books on Rekhta. He won 2 Filmfare and was awarded Padma Shri in 1971. He wrote about 760 songs apart from many Shayari, ghazals. He had many disputes with film makers over credits and fees more than Lata Mangeshkar (song track credit-Saregama music).
1953- Vasundhara Raje Scindia, princess of Gwalior state. married to Yuvraj Hemant Singh of Dholpur, was elected to Lok Sabha from Jhalwar, Rajasthan 5 times and became minister in AB Vajpayee govt. in 1998-2003. Became woman Chief minister of Rajasthan twice. She’s is now one of the National Vice Presidents of Bhartiya Janta Party since 2019 (pic credit-mid-day.com ).
1975 – Fardeen Khan, actor son of veteran Bollywood star Feroz Khan. Is known for films like Fida, Pyar Tune Kya Kia, Prem Agan, No Entry, Khel Khel Main, Acid Factory, Life Partner etc.
1989 – Harmanpreet Kaur, Indian women’s cricket team captain, has won matches with her all-round game. She scored 171 against Aussie women in 2017 ODI World Cup. She has p;layed 6 Tests, 141 ODIs, 178 T-20s and 75 wickets in all formats. Was awarded Arjuna award in 2017.
Titbits…. 1968 – 6 year old Tommy Moore scores hole-in-one in golf (Hagerstown, Maryland).
You may have known…. India has won all 5 men’s Kabaddi World Cups held till now and have been undefeated throughout these tournaments. The Indian women’s team has also won all Kabaddi World Cups held till date.
