1851 – The first freight train is operated in Roorkee.
1882 – The first string of electric lights decorating a Christmas tree was created for his home by Edward H. Johnson, an associate of Thomas Edison. Previously, trees had been decorated with wax candles.
1939 – When Britain declared war against the Germans it appealed for help from all Indian political parties. Having put some conditions, the Congress in order to pressurise the Govt, boycotted all ministries and started a Civil Disobedience Movement and eventually resigned.
1968 – The first U.S. live telecast from a manned spacecraft in outer space was transmitted from Apollo VIII. The earth The craft was 139,000 miles from earth, and the latter appeared as a blurred ball of light
1987 – U.S. scientists say a single gene may decide the sex of a baby.
2000 – Three Army Jawans die in an attack by a suicide squad of Lakshar-e-Taiba at the Red Fort in Delhi leading to a 45-minute gun-battle.
2023 – UN Security Council resolution votes to speed up delivery of desperately needed aid for Gaza 13-0 with Russia and the US abstaining.

1666 – Guru Gobind Singh. 10th Guru of Sikhs and follower Hindus, who established Khalsa Panth on Basakhi Day in 1699, to protect Hindus, ladies and weaker sections from the cruelty of Mughals, who had brutally killed earlier; 5th Guru Arjun Dev, 9th Guru Tegh Bahadur, his sons Sahebzada Fateh Singh, Jujhar Singh, and thousands of his followers who refused to adopt muslim religion. He ordered that in future Guru Granth Sahib will be the living Guru for Sikhs and selected Panj Piaras from his Sangat to advise his followers. He was a brave commander, thinker and poet.He was killed by 2 pashtuns on Aurangzeb’s orders on Oct. 7, 1708. Banda Bahadur Singh went to Delhi to take revenge of this cruelty.
1866 – Maulana Mazharul Haque (Mithapur, Patrna). An educationist, freedom fighter and Arebic, Persian scholar. A University was establioshed in his name later.
1887 – Srinivasa Iyengar Ramanujan, was the greatest Indian mathe-matician who did notable work on hypergeometric series and continued fractions. This day is celebrated as National Mathematics Day.

1958 – Taraknath Das. Famous revolutionary and colleague of Arvind Ghosh, Surendranath Banerjee and Chittaranjan Das. He was co-founder of Ghaddar Party in North America alongwith Sardar Ajit Singh, Lala Hardayal, Ras zBihari Das, Baraktulla Khan and Vishnu Harish Pingley araound 1912.
