Rajkot : Skipper Smriti Mandhana set a new milestone in Indian women’s cricket by smashing the fastest ODI century by an Indian woman cricketer. Mandhana achieved the feat in just 70 balls during the third ODI against Ireland in Rajkot on Wednesday.
Mandhana, leading the Indian team in the absence of regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur, played a dominant knock of 135 runs, which included 12 boundaries and seven sixes. She was eventually caught at short fine leg by Orla Prendergast.
With this century, Mandhana broke the previous record held by Kaur, who had scored a century in 87 balls against South Africa in Bengaluru last year. Mandhana’s century is also the joint-seventh fastest in women’s ODI history, equaling the record set by former England cricketer Charlotte Edwards in 2012.
This century is Mandhana’s 10th in ODIs, moving her to joint third on the all-time list of most centuries in women’s ODIs, alongside England’s Tammy Beaumont.
