Tribal forum calls Manipur video of two women being displayed naked “sickening.”
The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) criticised the May 4 incident involving the two women, which was revealed on Wednesday.
GUWAHATI: On May 4, two Kuki-Zo women were allegedly paraded naked and gang-raped.
A social media video of the altercation involving the two women surfaced on Wednesday. ITLF termed it “sickening.”
“Two-and-a-half months into Manipur’s ethnic conflict, Kuki-Zo tribal atrocities keep emerging. “A video that went viral today shows a large Meitei mob parading two Kuki-Zo tribal women naked towards a paddy field to be gang-raped,” the ITLF claimed.
The tribe reported the event at B Phainom village in Kangpokpi district on May 4.
The ITLF alleged the ladies were gang-raped after the village was burned down and two men—one middle-aged and one a teenager—were beaten to death by the mob.
“The perpetrators’ decision to share the video, which shows the victims’ identity, on social media amplifies the ordeal suffered by these innocent women,” the charity added.
It demanded that the Centre, Manipur government, National Commission for Women, and National Commission for Scheduled Tribes take action against the perpetrators.
On Wednesday, a Trinamool Congress team met with violence victims in Manipur.
On Wednesday, large groups of women defied the curfew to protest the Khwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Coordinating Committee for Peace’s “Mothers’ Protest” in Imphal.
The programme repeated the Kukis’ demands for NRC implementation, Assembly session convening immediately, state territorial integrity, and opposition to a separate administration.
Manipur violence killed 142 and displaced nearly 50,000.
