Shock for Fancy Number Enthusiasts: Punjab Increases Reserved Prices for Vehicle NumbersLudhiana: Fancy number plate lovers in Punjab have been hit with a major update as the state’s Transport Department has officially increased the reserved prices of fancy and small vehicle numbers. After three months of deliberation, the department has now approved the new pricing structure and issued an official notification.
The most sought-after number in the series, “0001,” previously priced at ₹2.5 lakh, will now cost a hefty ₹5 lakh. Similarly, numbers from “0002 to 0009” and the popular “0786” series, which were earlier available for ₹25,000, have seen a massive eightfold hike, now priced at ₹2 lakh.

In addition, other premium numbers have also witnessed significant price increases. Numbers like “1100,” “2200,” “3300,” and “6300” will now be available through an online auction. This move aims to enhance transparency and curb the influence of middlemen in the fancy number bidding process.

To further regulate the process, the government has made Aadhaar KYC mandatory for individuals participating in the bidding, ensuring that only genuine buyers can secure these numbers.

The drastic price hike has sparked mixed reactions among vehicle owners. While some believe it will prevent black marketing and unauthorized dealings in fancy numbers, others see it as an unnecessary financial burden. Automobile dealers also anticipate a potential dip in demand for fancy numbers due to the sharp increase in costs.

The Punjab Transport Department has justified the decision, stating that the increased revenue from fancy number auctions will contribute to road safety initiatives, infrastructure development, and better transport facilities across the state. Officials have also hinted at further regulatory measures to make the allocation process more transparent.

This latest notification serves as a clear message to luxury vehicle owners and fancy number enthusiasts—getting a premium vehicle number in Punjab will now come at a premium cost.
