New Delhi : Reliance Industries, India’s most valuable company, has partnered with Dubai-based logistics giant DP World to introduce an innovative rail freight solution aimed at reducing carbon emissions. This collaboration is set to shift cargo transportation from road to rail, significantly enhancing efficiency and sustainability in the petrochemical sector.

DP World announced that this new initiative will connect Reliance Industries’ Jamnagar plant to DP World’s Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Ahmedabad and further to Mundra Port. Previously, cargo moving between Jamnagar and Mundra required around 700 kilometers of road transport, leading to higher fuel consumption and emissions. The new rail-based solution will now replace this extensive road transport with an integrated rail service, significantly reducing carbon footprints and logistics costs.

The rail corridor has been designed to transport up to 1,260 tons of cargo in a single trip, accommodating 45 containers at a time. This shift will minimize the dependence on multiple trailers and truck drivers, streamlining operations and improving supply chain efficiency. According to Ganesh Raj, Global Chief Operating Officer of DP World Marine Services, this initiative aligns with Reliance’s sustainability goals while also catering to their expanding operational needs.

Ravikumar Nair, Head of Petrochemical Operations at Reliance Industries, emphasized that transitioning from road to rail has improved operational efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. As part of Reliance’s long-term vision, this initiative is expected to contribute to India’s broader environmental goals while ensuring cost-effective and timely cargo movement.

Meanwhile, Reliance Industries’ stock reflected positive investor sentiment, closing 0.62% higher at ₹1,276.45 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Analysts believe that this sustainable logistics move further solidifies Reliance’s commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility, positioning the company as a leader in green industrial solutions.

With this collaboration, Reliance and DP World are setting new standards for eco-friendly logistics solutions in India. The success of this initiative could pave the way for similar transitions across industries, reinforcing the role of rail freight in sustainable transportation.
