Rahul Gandhi Slams BJP Over Savarkar’s Views During Constitution Debate

Congress leader pushes for caste census, advocates removal of 50% reservation cap

New Delhi: Participating in the Lok Sabha debate on 75 years of the Constitution’s adoption, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi took a sharp dig at the BJP, accusing the ruling party of “ridiculing” its ideologue V D Savarkar by pledging to protect the Constitution.

Gandhi cited Savarkar’s controversial remarks, claiming the latter had dismissed the Indian Constitution, stating there was “nothing Indian” about it and expressing a preference for the Hindu scripture Manusmriti.

“Ridiculing Savarkar”
In his address, Gandhi said, “When you speak about protecting the Constitution, do you stand by your leader’s words? Because by doing so, you are abusing and ridiculing Savarkar.”

He lauded the Constitution as a document of modern India, deeply rooted in ancient Indian ideas. However, he argued that the BJP’s actions contradicted their stated commitment to the Constitution, citing their policies and governance style.

Criticism of Economic Policies and Farmer Issues
Using the story of Eklavya, Gandhi drew parallels between mythological sacrifices and the alleged suffering of marginalized communities under BJP governance. He criticized the government’s decision to redevelop Dharavi with corporate involvement, accusing them of “cutting the thumb” of small businesses. Gandhi also brought up the plight of farmers, referring to the use of tear gas against protesters outside Delhi.

Caste Census and Reservation Policy
Gandhi reiterated the Congress party’s call for a nationwide caste census and advocated removing the 50% cap on reservations. He emphasized that these measures were essential for ensuring social justice and equitable representation for marginalized communities.

The speech sparked sharp reactions from the treasury benches, further intensifying the debate on the Constitution and its relevance in India’s socio-political fabric.
