Ludhiana (Punjab) : is set to become the first state in India to conduct a drug census, aiming to identify and rehabilitate drug addicts across the state. The government will carry out door-to-door surveys to collect confidential data on individuals affected by drug addiction. This initiative is part of a larger effort to curb drug abuse and bring addicts back into mainstream society through proper treatment and rehabilitation programs.

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal announced that the drug census will begin on April 1, 2025. Addressing a gathering in Ludhiana, Kejriwal emphasized the importance of understanding the ground reality of drug addiction to take effective measures. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling the drug menace with stringent action against drug peddlers.

As part of this initiative, the Punjab government has launched an anti-drug helpline, 9779100200, encouraging citizens to report drug dealers in their areas. The government has assured that the identity of informants will be kept confidential and strict action will be taken against those involved in drug trafficking.

In addition to the drug census, the Punjab government is focusing on youth engagement programs, including the development of sports facilities in villages. Over 87 villages in Tarn Taran have already received new playgrounds, and efforts are underway to build gyms in every village to promote a healthy lifestyle and deter youth from drug addiction.

Kejriwal also addressed concerns about Punjab’s governance, stating that the AAP government is determined to eliminate corruption and ensure better public services. Plans are in place to upgrade healthcare facilities, with the government working on free health cards for those without Ayushman cards. Major reforms in land registry services are also expected in the coming months to curb corruption.

The Punjab government’s initiative marks a significant step toward eradicating drug abuse from the state. By focusing on treatment, rehabilitation, and strict law enforcement, the government aims to create a drug-free Punjab and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
