Ludhiana : A shocking incident unfolded in Ludhiana’s Chak Bhai Ka village when Powercom employees, who had arrived to disconnect electricity meters of defaulters, were attacked by a mob. The team from the Shahjahanpur office of the Bassian Grid had gone to the village on Tuesday evening to cut off power supply for non-paying customers. However, news of their arrival spread quickly, and villagers, led by women at the forefront, surrounded the officials. The situation escalated as the locals opposed the disconnection, citing government provisions for free electricity for the poor. Heated arguments ensued, leading to an outbreak of violence.

The attackers included both men and women, and they brutally assaulted the Powercom workers. Line worker Sukhchain Singh’s turban was knocked off in the scuffle, while another employee, Nazi Singh, sustained serious injuries to his face and nose. Reports suggest that the mob threw Nazi to the ground and dragged him while continuing to beat him severely. The workers’ motorcycles were also vandalized during the altercation. It was only due to the intervention of passersby that the employees were finally rescued from the enraged villagers.

Following the attack, both injured employees were admitted to the civil hospital for medical treatment. However, authorities have yet to receive a formal complaint regarding the incident. Hathur Police Station in-charge Narinder Singh confirmed that they are aware of the incident but are awaiting an official report to proceed with legal action. Additionally, no Medico-Legal Report (MLR) has been submitted by the hospital as of now. Authorities assure that necessary action will be taken once a formal complaint is lodged.

This incident highlights the growing tensions between Powercom and residents in certain areas where electricity disconnections are being enforced due to non-payment. Villagers argue that the government’s provision of free electricity should be upheld, whereas officials are simply carrying out their duty to recover outstanding bills. As investigations continue, authorities will likely face increased pressure to ensure both law enforcement and public safety in such operations.
