Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s ‘Miya’ statements prompted police complaints.
The CPI(M) said Sarma made hate statements to divide Hindus and Muslims.
GUWAHATI: The CPI(M) and a Rajya Sabha member filed police reports, while the Trinamool Congress petitioned Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud to take action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his “Miyas” hate remark.
East Bengali Muslims in Assam are called miya.
“The Chief Minister of Assam asked people from Upper Assam area to come to Guwahati and he would clear Guwahati from Miyas,” Rajya Sabha member (independent) Ajit Kumar Bhuyan wrote in his complaint. Such statements aim to divide groups and harm national integration.”
He added the Supreme Court ordered all states and Union Territories to file hate speech charges even if there is no complaint. To preserve the state’s “fragile” tranquilly, he asked the police to file a case under IPC Sections 153A, 153B, and 295A.

“Himanta Biswa Sarma has blamed the ‘Miya’ Muslim community for the skyrocketing vegetable prices in the state…””He urged the Assamese youth to come forward and assured them that all the ‘Miya’ Muslim vegetable sellers would be driven away from the city,” the CPI(M) complained.
“He also stated that the increasing presence of the ‘Miya’ community in various sectors of the state, such as cab and bus services, was a growing concern,” the party added.
