PARK Hospital Patiala becomes a Centre-of-excellence in Cardiac Sciences

 Patiala: In an effort to create awareness on the rising trend of heart disease in the Indian population a team of doctors from Park Hospital, Patiala addressed media persons today. Dr Harsimranjit Singh senior consultant cardiology and Dr Brampraksah vice president medical services from PARK Hospital Patiala addressed the media.
PARK Hospitals is North India’s biggest super specialty hospital network with 19 hospitals , 3500 beds, 800 ICU beds , 14 cath labs, 45 modular OTs and over 1000 doctors, according to press release.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Harsimranjit Singh said that PARK Hospital Patiala has become center-of-excellence for cardiac sciences since all the facilities like primary angioplasty, complex angioplasties, biventricular pacemaker ( CRT), combo devices, ICDs, carotid artery stenting, TAVR/ TAVI , peripheral artery & below knee interventions, management of aortic dissections and aortic aneurysms are available under one roof.
Dr Harsimranjit also shared that in India, out of the estimated population of more than 1.44 billion dispersed across various geographical regions; about 30 million people suffer from coronary artery disease. India will soon have the highest number of cases of cardiovascular disease in the world. Also 27 % of deaths in India are caused by cardiovascular diseases.
Dr Harsimranjit Singh further said that India tops the world in heart attacks among 35 plus men & cardiovascular diseases would be the largest cause of death and disability in India by next decade.
“The average age of people with heart ailments is coming down and these days we are getting patients as young as 25 years, who are coming to us with heart attacks. Few years back children used to bring their parents to the doctor for heart related issues. Now it is not uncommon to see parents bringing their children in the 30s and 40s to doctor for heart related issues. Now a greater number of young Indians are suffering from coronary artery disease, owing to their poor lifestyle, and if this continues the future looks even more dangerous.”
Dr Brahm Prakash said, “In India, heart ailments have replaced communicable diseases as the biggest killer. According to recent data, approximately 30 percent of the urban population and 15 percent of the population living in rural areas suffer from high blood pressure and heart attacks. As the risk factors of heart ailments increase, so does the mortality rate.

Tips to reduce heart disease risk:
1. Don’t smoke, 2.  Know your risks–hypertension, diabetes & cholesterol as these are silent killers, 3.  Maintain healthy weight, 4.  Exercise regularly, 5.  Eat less saturated fat, more vegetables & more fiber, 6.  Get your lipids checked and avoid trans fats, 7.  Avoid / consume alcohol in moderation, 8.  Go for annual preventive health packages, 9.  Manage your stress by yoga and meditation, 10.  Know your homocysteine levels.
