Paralympic Archer Harvinder Singh Honored with Padma Shri
Kaithal’s First Padma Shri Awardee Practiced in Fields During Lockdown
Kaithal : Paralympic archer Harvinder Singh has been honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award, making him the first recipient of this honor from Kaithal, Haryana. Harvinder’s inspiring journey from a small village to global recognition is a testament to his resilience, determination, and extraordinary talent.
Born in a farming family in Kaithal, Harvinder overcame physical challenges to emerge as a national hero. He made history by winning India’s first-ever Paralympic medal in archery at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, securing a bronze in the men’s individual recurve category. His achievements have brought immense pride not only to Haryana but also to the entire nation.
What sets Harvinder apart is his dedication to the sport. During the COVID-19 lockdown, when training facilities were shut, he turned his family’s fields into a makeshift archery range. Practicing in the scorching heat of Haryana, he honed his skills with limited resources, demonstrating that passion and hard work can overcome any obstacle.
Harvinder’s journey in archery began during his college years, where he was introduced to the sport. Despite facing financial constraints and physical challenges due to a childhood illness, he rose to prominence with consistent performances in national and international competitions. Over the years, he has won numerous medals at the Asian Para Games, World Para Archery Championships, and Paralympics.
The Padma Shri is a recognition of Harvinder’s contributions to Indian sports and his role in inspiring countless individuals with disabilities to pursue their dreams. In his acceptance speech, Harvinder expressed gratitude to his family, coaches, and the government for their support. “This honor is not just mine; it belongs to everyone who believed in me and supported my journey,” he said.
Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar congratulated Harvinder on his achievement and announced plans to develop better facilities for para-athletes in Haryana. The villagers of Kaithal celebrated the occasion with great enthusiasm, organizing a felicitation ceremony to honor their local hero.
Harvinder Singh’s story is a beacon of hope and motivation for aspiring athletes across India. His unwavering spirit and achievements remind us that determination can break all barriers and lead to extraordinary success.
