Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday formed an independent commission to ensure adequate representation to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the state’s local body elections in line with the Supreme Court directives.
According to government sources, retired Gujarat High Court judge Justice K S Jhaveri will head the commission.
Before finalizing the seats of OBCs in the civic bodies, the commission will look into the causes, effects and political situation of backwardness in such local bodies.
Notably, the Supreme Court has directed that the reservation ratio in local bodies should be determined on the basis of the recommendations of this independent commission. (UNI)
