1609 – The telescope was demonstrated by Galileo.
1617 – The first one-way streets were established in London.
1833 – Britain abolishes slavery in colonies; 700,000 slaves freed.
1839 – British capture Hong Kong from China. (The British government agreed to transfer sovereignty of the entirety of Hong Kong to China upon the expiration of the lease in 1997).
1899 – The first ship-to-shore wireless message to be received in the U.S was: “Sherman is sighted.” (This was the first 19th-century working use of wireless telegraphy outside of England. The method was still primitive, using sparks to emit intermittent radio waves and code messages).
1904 – Harry D. Weed of New York, was issued a U.S. patent for his “Grip-Tread for Pneumatic Tires” – a snow tire chain for automobiles.
1933 – Mahatma Gandhi released from Indian jail following another hunger strike
1966 – The Lunar Orbiter 1 took the first photograph of the Earth from the Moon. (That image was an after-thought, because the essential purpose of the Lunar Orbiter mission was to identify suitable landing sites on the moon surface in preparation for the manned missions to the moon).
1947 – Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was sworn in as the Deputy Prime Minister of India.
1996 – Osama bin Laden issues message, ‘A declaration of war against the Americans occupying the land of the two holy places.’
2000 – India, Japan unveils new global partnership and agree to start a formal security dialogue. Sanctions status quo on CTBT.
2011 – Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi is overthrown after the National Transitional Council forces take control of Bab al-Azizia compound during the 2011 Libyan Civil War.
2015 – Destruction by IS of the 1st century AD temple of Baalshamin in ancient ruins of Palmyra confirmed by Syrian officials.
2017 – Nearly 60 million people in the Indus Valley, Pakistan at risk from arsenic in research published in “Science Advances”.
