1795 – Dutch East India controlled Cape Colony (present day South Africa) surrenders to Britain.

1846 – Jung Bahadur Rana grabs power in Nepal. (He paved the way for establishment of Rana Dynasty, introduced innovations into the bureaucracy and the judiciary, and made efforts to “modernise” Nepal. He remains one of the most important figures in Nepalese history, though modern historians have also blamed Jung Bahadur for setting up the dictatorship that repressed the nation for 104 years from 1903 BS to 2007 BS and left it in a primitive economic condition. Others exclusively blame his nephews, the Shumsher Ranas, for Nepal’s dark period of history. Rana rule was marked by tyranny, debauchery, economic exploitation and religious persecution).

1916 – Britain’s 1st use of tanks in Battle of Somme. (During the Battle of Somme, the British launched a major offensive against the Germans, employing tanks for the first time in history. At Battle of Flers-Courcelette, part of the Battle of the Somme, some of the 40 or so primitive tanks advanced over a mile into enemy lines but were too slow to hold their positions during the German counterattack and subject to mechanical breakdown. However, General Douglas Haig, commander of Allied forces at the Somme, saw the promise of this new instrument of war and ordered the war department to produce hundreds more).

1928 – Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming discovers penicillin while studying influenza.

1950 – During Korean conflict, United Nations forces land at Inchon in South Korea.

1952 – European Parliament forms in Strasbourg.

1953 – S. Vijayalakshmi Pandit was elected as the first lady President of the eighth session of the United Nations Organization’s (UNO) General Assembly.

1959 – Public sector broadcaster Door Darshan Launched. DD provides television, radio, online and mobile services throughout metropolitan and regional India, as well as overseas, through the Indian Network and Radio India.

1965 – President Ayub Khan appeals to the US to use its influence to end Indian-Pakistani hostilities.

1998 – The rings around the planet Jupiter were declared to be made of dust from the impacts of cosmic bodies that crashed into Jupiter’s moons. The idea came from studies of the rings made by scientists at several institutions.

2012 – Japan announces that it will phase out nuclear energy by the 2030s.

2018 – Archaeologists find the oldest-known brewery and remains of 13,000-year-old beer in Haifa cave, Israel, belonging to nomadic Natufian people.

2021 – US, UK and Australia announce trilateral security partnership Aukus, to counteract influence of China, including helping Australia build nuclear-powered submarines.

2021 – SpaceX launches the first all-civilian spaceflight from Cape Canaveral, Florida, for three-day orbit around Earth.

1909 – Thiru Conjeevaram Natarajan Annadurai, ”Anna”, founder of DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, also an editor, writer, orator and patriot, was born in a weaver community of Kanchipuram.

1912 – Rusi Karanjia, journalist and publisher.
