1703 – During the “Great Storm” more than 8,000 people perished and the first Eddystone lighthouse – 14 miles south of Plymouth, England – was totally destroyed; among the dead was its designer, Henry Winstanley. (The current structure is the fourth to be built on the site. The first and second were destroyed by storm and fire. The third, also known as Smeaton’s Tower, is the best known because of its influence on lighthouse design and its importance in the development of concrete for building. The first lighthouse, completed in 1699, was the world’s first open ocean lighthouse).

1716 – The first lion to be seen in America, tamed for exhibition, was exhibited by Captain Arthur Savage at his house in Brattle Street, Boston.

1789 – 1st US national Thanksgiving.

1832 – The first horse drawn American street car in the U.S. began public operation in New York City.

1922 – Archaeologist Howard Carter pierced the second of two doorways closing the tomb of King Tutankamun.

1948 – 1st polaroid camera sold (for $89.75) in Boston at the Jordan Marsh department store.

1949 – India adopts a constitution as a British Commonwealth Republic. (New Constitution of India adopted and signed. The constitution of India was framed by a Constituent Assembly set up under the Cabinet Mission Plan, 1946. The Assembly held its first meeting on December 9, 1946 and elected Dr.Rajendra Prasad as its Chairman. The Constitution was prepared by the Drafting commission under the chairmanship of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. The Constitution is preceded by a preamble which outlines its aim and objectives).

1960 – First S.T.D. system of telephone (Subscriber Trunk Dialling) services started between Lucknow and Kanpur.

2008 – Mumbai terrorist attacks over four days. (10 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, an Islamic militant organisation based in Pakistan, carried out a series of 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days across Mumbai. 164 people were killed and at least 308 wounded. Ajmal Kasab who was captured alive, disclosed that the attackers were members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, among others. The Government of India said that the attackers came from Pakistan, and their controllers were in Pakistan. On 7 January 2009, Pakistan confirmed the sole surviving perpetrator of the attacks was a Pakistani citizen. On 9 April 2015, the foremost ringleader of the attacks, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, was granted bail against surety bonds of ₨ 200,000 in Pakistan).

2013 – If verified, a Buddhist shrine discovered in Nepal that dates to 550 BC could change the date of the Buddha’s birthday.

1836 – John Loudon McAdam, the inventor of of macadamized roads (Scottish).

2005 – Gopal Vinayak Godse. He was the younger brother of Nathuram Godse and one of the conspirators in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on 30 January 1948. He was the last among them to survive and lived his last days in Pune.
