In Canada, Meta begins to censor news on Facebook and Instagram
In Canada, Meta begins to restrict news on Facebook and Instagram. The action is in response to the Online News Act, which mandates that tech companies compensate news publishers for their material and was passed by the Canadian Parliament.
OTTAWA: Meta blocked Canadians’ access to news on Facebook and Instagram on Tuesday in reaction to a new law mandating digital firms to pay publishers.
Google, another critic of the Online News Act, is mulling a similar step as more governments try to force tech corporations to pay for news material.
“News links and content posted by news publishers and broadcasters in Canada will no longer be viewable by people in Canada,” Meta stated.
Canadian Facebook and Instagram users can no longer view or share international news.
Meta said the Tuesday modifications would be introduced “over the course of the next few weeks.”
An AFP reporter could still access news on Facebook Tuesday, but several users reported receiving alerts claiming such content was prohibited.
The Online News Act relies on Australian legislation and tries to protect a faltering Canadian news business that has lost advertising dollars and hundreds of newspapers in the last decade.
Digital companies must establish reasonable financial relationships with Canadian sources for news and information provided on their platforms or face binding arbitration.
