Punjab / Chandigarh : The Punjab and Haryana High Court has expressed strong displeasure over the illegal sale of medicines without prescriptions in both states. The court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to conduct immediate raids on pharmacies and medical stores suspected of selling drugs without proper authorization. It has also asked for a detailed status report on the matter.

This directive comes after reports surfaced about a widespread illegal drug trade, where many pharmacies were found selling prescription drugs without verifying prescriptions. These medicines, including high-dose painkillers and psychotropic substances, are often misused for addiction. The court has taken suo motu cognizance of the issue and stressed the need for stricter regulations to prevent unauthorized drug distribution.

The High Court has also instructed the health departments of both states to increase surveillance and take strict action against violators. It emphasized that the unchecked sale of prescription drugs poses a serious threat to public health, especially among youth, and needs immediate intervention.

Authorities have begun identifying hotspots where such illegal activities are prevalent. Special teams have been formed to conduct raids and seal any medical stores found violating the law. Several arrests are expected as part of this crackdown.

The court has warned that failure to control the issue will lead to further legal action against responsible officials. It has scheduled the next hearing in the case after receiving the status report from CBI and NCB.
