LS passes Constitution amendment bill; restores power of states, UTs to make OBC lists

New Delhi, Aug 10 (UNI) Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed a bill that seeks to restore the power of
states and Union territories to make their own OBC lists.
The bill was passed by the House with 385 members voting in its support during the division
as it is a Constitution amendment bill.
The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Seventh Amendment) Bill, 2021
was taken up for debate in Lok Sabha after the Opposition agreed to support the measure.
Replying to the debate on the bill, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Virendra Kumar
thanked all the members for supporting the bill.
He said this bill seeks to restore the power of states and Union territories to make their own OBC lists.
On the issue of Maratha reservation which was raised during the debate on the bill, the
minister said it is a state subject and through this bill, the Centre has empowered the Maharashtra government to implement the reservation.
Earlier, during the debate on the bill, several MPs demanded lifting the 50 per cent limit for
reservations, and also demanded a caste-based census.
