Chandigarh : The scorching heat of summer has made an early and intense arrival in North India, with the first week of April already witnessing a sharp spike in temperatures. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh and several regions of Punjab and Haryana are set to experience extreme heat conditions in the coming days.

In Chandigarh, temperatures are expected to hover between 39°C and 40°C by April 10, while certain parts of Punjab and Haryana may witness the mercury crossing the 40°C mark. The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for the region, urging people to take precautionary measures, especially during the afternoon hours.

The unseasonal heat is being attributed to dry northwesterly winds and clear skies, which have allowed the sun’s intensity to dominate. Weather experts suggest that this early surge in temperature is unusual, especially when April has just begun. Typically, such heatwave-like conditions are more common during the peak of May and June.

The Meteorological Department further stated that there will be no significant drop in temperature over the next three to four days. This means residents of Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana will have to brace themselves for harsh summer conditions, including dry winds and increased risk of heat-related illnesses.

With no immediate signs of relief in sight, health officials are advising citizens to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and ensure children and elderly individuals remain protected from direct sun exposure. Public awareness campaigns have also been initiated in certain districts to help people prepare for the heatwave.

Farmers and agricultural workers have been specifically cautioned as prolonged exposure to heat may cause heat strokes. The government is closely monitoring the situation and may issue further advisories based on the evolving weather pattern.

Residents are also being encouraged to reduce the use of heat-generating appliances during the day, consume light meals, and wear loose, light-colored clothing. Authorities have asked schools to ensure students are not exposed to extreme heat during outdoor activities.

As the region continues to sizzle under the sun’s fiery grip, all eyes are on whether a change in wind pattern or a possible western disturbance could bring some respite in the days to come.
