Indore trader commits suicide after 3 loan sharks harassed him

BHOPAL: A 35-year-old spice trader named Virendra Ramgulam Sen allegedly committed suicide on Monday in Indore, the largest city in Madhya Pradesh, because he could no longer tolerate the harassment from loan sharks.

In response to the incident, the Azad Nagar police in Indore on Tuesday evening filed a case under Section 306 IPC charging three individuals, including Raju Pal, Sunil Raikwar, and Shankar Sharma, with aiding suicide. The three were then taken into custody, according to Indresh Tripathi, the Azad Nagar police station’s in-charge.

Sen recorded a heartbreaking video and penned a five-page suicide letter to the Indore police commissioner before he hanged himself inside his home in the Musakhedi neighbourhood.

He can be heard sobbing in the video as he describes his extended agony as a result of the three loan sharks from whom he borrowed Rs. 1 lakh in 2016.

“I have paid the principal amount and a significant portion of the 10% interest, but they are still pressuring me to pay them an additional Rs. 4-5 lakh. I sold my store and land to pay back their loan, but they are still asking for more. Since last year, I have neglected to pay the tuition for my two children. Two cases have been filed against me by the three individuals, Shankar Sharma, Sunil Raikwar, and Raju Pal, but I don’t even have the funds to cover the attorney’s expenses. Sen was heard on the tape saying, “I have no choice but to terminate my life and beg you (the police commissioner) not to trouble my family after my end.

Sen is survived by his wife, parents, who are in their 80s, and two kids, who are 15 and 12 years old.
