IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alerts for Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh as Low-Pressure System Intensifies

Orange and Yellow Alerts Issued for December 11-12, With Heavy Rain Expected Across Several Districts in Southern India

Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall warnings for Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh due to a “well-marked low-pressure area” over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. The weather system is expected to bring significant rainfall to several regions of southern India on Wednesday, December 11, and Thursday, December 12.

An orange alert has been issued for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe, signaling the possibility of heavy rains. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and South Interior Karnataka have been placed under a yellow alert, indicating moderate rainfall with the possibility of isolated heavy showers.

Tamil Nadu:
The weather department has forecast light to moderate rainfall over many areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with thunderstorms and lightning in a few locations. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in isolated areas of districts like Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai on December 11. Other regions such as Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, and Kallakurichi are also expected to receive heavy rain. This includes major cities like Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu.

On December 12, the weather forecast continues to show the possibility of light to moderate rain in many parts of Tamil Nadu, with thunderstorms in some areas. Heavy rain is predicted for districts like Thanjavur, Sivagangai, Pudukkottai, and Tiruchirappalli, with additional rainfall expected in Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and other regions.

Andhra Pradesh & Rayalaseema:
Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema are likely to experience heavy rainfall at isolated places on both December 11 and 12. The IMD has urged caution, particularly in regions near the coast, as the low-pressure system continues to move toward the Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka coast.

Fishing Advisory:
Fishermen in Tamil Nadu have been advised to refrain from venturing into the sea from December 11 to 13 due to the adverse weather conditions. The IMD has also issued alerts for the possibility of rough seas during this period.

Extended Forecast:
The IMD predicts heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until December 13, with very heavy rainfall expected on December 11 and 12. Other areas like Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema are also likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall in the coming days.

The weather system is expected to move west-northwest towards the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coasts in the next 24 hours, intensifying rain and storm activity across the region.

Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to stay updated on weather warnings and take necessary precautions against possible flooding, landslides, and power disruptions.
