IIT Delhi Develops Bulletproof Jackets for Army
Designed to Withstand Extreme Cold Conditions....
New Delhi: IIT Delhi scientists, in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), have successfully developed the world’s lightest and most durable bulletproof jackets, meeting BIS Level 6 and BIS Level 5 standards. These jackets are designed to withstand extreme cold, including temperatures as low as -60°C, making them ideal for Indian Army personnel stationed in places like Siachen. The jackets are significantly lighter than foreign-made ones, with one jacket weighing 1 kg less and the other 2.5 kg less.
The jackets are engineered with special antimicrobial fabrics, making them comfortable for soldiers to wear for 3 to 4 months continuously, without hygiene issues. The design also incorporates easy removal of layers to adjust to varying temperatures. Additionally, the jackets can endure up to 8 sniper bullets under BIS Level 6 standards and 8 AK-47 bullets under BIS Level 5.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that India is progressing towards self-reliance in defense technology, particularly with advancements in modern weaponry and AI technologies. This innovation marks a significant step towards enhancing the operational capabilities of Indian soldiers.
Currently, Indian soldiers use foreign-made bulletproof jackets weighing 10.5 kg, but the new indigenous jackets promise reduced weight without compromising protection, crucial for the harsh conditions in Siachen. The jackets will be available to the Indian Army in 2025, marking a new era of defense innovation.
The development of such extreme protective clothing is part of IIT Delhi’s broader efforts to meet India’s defense needs, with additional innovations including firefighting suits capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1200°C for 20 seconds.
