Punjab : In a shocking incident of corruption and extortion, two police officers in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district were arrested for demanding a bribe of Rs. 1.5 lakh from a man, threatening to falsely implicate his son in a drug case. The accused, identified as Station House Officer (SHO) Raman Kumar and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gurdeep Singh of the Bullowal police station, were taken into custody by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau after a thorough investigation. The victim, a concerned father, had approached the authorities when he was informed that his son was at risk of being framed in a drug-related case unless he paid the hefty bribe.

The vigilance team conducted a sting operation after receiving a complaint from the victim, and both officers were caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. The incident has raised serious concerns about the growing issue of police corruption in the state and the abuse of power by law enforcement officers. According to sources, the officers had initially made threats to involve the son of the complainant in a narcotics case, demanding the substantial amount in exchange for not pursuing the case.

The arrest of the SHO and ASI marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown on corruption within the Punjab Police. The vigilance team in Jalandhar has already filed a case against the officers under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and further investigations are underway. Officials have vowed to take strict action against any personnel found guilty of engaging in corrupt practices and extortion, promising that such activities will not be tolerated within the police department.

This incident also highlights the dire need for transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies, particularly in regions where corruption has taken deep roots. While the vigilance bureau continues to gather evidence in this case, the authorities are also looking into whether these officers had previously been involved in similar illegal activities. Public trust in the police is often eroded when such incidents come to light, and there have been growing calls for more stringent measures to curb corruption in the state police forces.

The Punjab Police has expressed its commitment to bringing about reforms and ensuring that any officer involved in corrupt practices faces appropriate legal consequences. The department is working on strengthening its internal mechanisms to detect and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The arrest of the two officers is seen as a step in the right direction, but many believe more needs to be done to restore public confidence in the police.

As investigations continue, both the officers remain in police custody, awaiting further action from the judiciary. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau’s prompt action is being lauded by the public, as it sends a clear message that corruption will not be tolerated in the state’s law enforcement agencies.
