Punjab : is expected to witness heavy rainfall today, with the Meteorological Department issuing an orange alert for four regions. Strong winds and thunderstorms are also predicted, raising concerns for farmers and residents. In Amritsar and Patiala, a recent hailstorm has already caused significant damage to crops, adding to the worries of the agricultural sector.
According to weather officials, unstable atmospheric conditions and a western disturbance are responsible for the heavy showers. Areas including Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Bathinda are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h. The orange alert warns of possible waterlogging in urban areas and disruptions in daily life.
Farmers in Amritsar and Patiala have reported substantial crop damage due to hailstorms. Wheat, mustard, and vegetable crops have suffered the most, impacting their yield just before the harvest season. Many farmers have urged the government to assess the losses and provide compensation.
Authorities have advised people to stay indoors during heavy rain and avoid unnecessary travel. The Punjab Disaster Management Team is on high alert, monitoring flood-prone areas to prevent any emergencies. Schools in some districts have been asked to take precautionary measures in case of severe weather conditions.
Over the past few days, Punjab has experienced unseasonal rainfall, which has affected transportation and disrupted normal life. Meteorologists suggest that the rainy conditions may persist for the next 48 hours before clearing up. Meanwhile, neighboring states like Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are also experiencing similar weather patterns.
Environmental experts highlight that climate change is playing a role in increasing the frequency of extreme weather events in northern India. The unpredictability of rainfall and hailstorms is becoming a growing concern for farmers, who are already struggling with fluctuating weather patterns.
As Punjab faces another day of intense rain and storms, residents are urged to stay updated with weather advisories. Farmers, in particular, are hoping for relief measures to minimize their financial losses.
