Chandigarh : The counting of votes for the Haryana municipal and corporation elections began on Wednesday morning, marking a crucial day in the state’s political landscape. Early trends indicate a strong performance by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while the Congress appears to be struggling. In key regions like Rohtak, BJP has gained a lead, leaving Congress trailing behind. The elections, which were conducted on March 2, saw voting across 10 municipal corporations and 40 municipal bodies. Reports suggest that out of 51 lakh registered voters, only 46% turned up to cast their votes.

Voting was held for the mayoral and ward member positions in seven major municipal corporations, including Gurugram, Manesar, Faridabad, Hisar, Rohtak, Karnal, and Yamunanagar. Additionally, by-elections were conducted for the mayor’s post in Ambala and Sonipat. This time, both BJP and Congress contested the elections on their party symbols, with polling conducted through electronic voting machines (EVMs). However, the election process has not been without controversy, as allegations of EVM malfunction have surfaced in Yamunanagar, leading to tensions among party workers and voters.

The State Election Commission had made extensive arrangements to ensure smooth counting. Security was tightened across all counting centers to prevent any disruptions. In light of the election results, liquor shops in several areas have been temporarily shut down to maintain law and order. The results for Panipat Municipal Corporation, where voting was delayed and held separately on March 9, are also expected to be declared today.

With BJP making significant gains in multiple regions, political experts believe this could set the tone for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections. The Congress, which had hoped for a comeback, is witnessing a disappointing performance in several constituencies. The party’s weak position in early trends has raised concerns among its leaders and supporters. Meanwhile, independent candidates and smaller parties have also managed to secure a few key victories, adding to the overall political dynamics of the state.

As counting progresses, all eyes are on the final results, which will determine the future political landscape of Haryana’s urban governance. The BJP’s lead suggests strong voter support, but the Congress still hopes for a turnaround in the later phases of counting. The coming hours will be crucial in shaping the final outcome of the Haryana municipal elections.
