Government Alerts Students About 21 Fake Universities

Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, urged Members of Parliament (MPs) on Monday to spread awareness about 21 fake universities operating in India. His appeal was made during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, where he also highlighted the government’s efforts to take legal action against these fraudulent institutions.

Majumdar revealed that the central government had already requested state chief secretaries and Union Territory administrations to close down such unrecognised universities. He further appealed to MPs, particularly those active on social media, to help publicize the list of fake universities to prevent students from enrolling in these institutions.

The Minister stressed that state governments also play a key role in addressing the issue, as taking direct action could raise questions about federalism. He outlined that between 2014 and 2024, 12 fake universities had been shut down, and several FIRs were filed against these institutions for awarding invalid degrees. Other institutions were issued showcause or warning notices.

In addition, Majumdar urged state and Union Territory administrations to inform the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the central government about any other unrecognised institutions operating in their areas. He emphasized that degrees issued by these fake universities are invalid, and the government is working to protect students from being deceived.

The UGC maintains an official list of fake universities, which includes institutions operating in Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Some of the universities on the list include:
